Designed in 1969, from the onset the Up series has been one of the most outstanding expressions of design with its expressive shapes upholstered with elastic fabric. The seven items that form it include the armchair and pouf UP5_6, icon of modernity, metaphor of the female figure that is endowed with a comfortable womb and is yet a prisoner.

Gaetano Pesce

Born in La Spezia, Italy, in 1939 and educated in Venice, Gaetano Pesce has become prominent in several fields – architecture, interior design, graphics, film… The architect’s reputation has also been built upon exuberant experimentation in the area of industrial design and furnishings, including development of a series of now iconic chairs, like the up series, tables and lamps. In addition to maintaining long-standing relationships with such landmark furniture manufacturers as B&B Italia, Cassina and Vitra international, Gaetano Pesce has launched the New York city companies fish design and open sky to develop and manufacture home design objects, lighting and jewellery for the consumer market. Gaetano Pesce’s work is represented in the permanent collections of leading museums internationally, including the museum of modern art and the metropolitan museum of art in New York city, the San Francisco museum of modern art, the Victoria and Albert museum in London, the musée des arts décoratifs and the centre geoges pompidou in Paris, and the musée des arts décoratifs and the centre canadien d’architecture in Montréal. In 1996 he was honoured with a career retrospective at the centre geoges pompidou in Paris.
